North East Fife area
North East Fife area is the largest geographical area in
Communities Policing Division and has a population of over 76,000,
which is approximately 21% of Fife's population. North East Fife
consists of the area formerly covered by Eastern Division and
includes Police stations in Cupar and St.Andrews with section
stations at Howe of Fife, Tay Coast and East Neuk. Cupar Sheriff
Court sits in the former County Buildings in Cupar.
North East Fife is largely rural and is bordered by the River
Tay, the River Forth, Tayside Police area in the west at Gateside
and Newburgh and Glenrothes area at the Lomond Hills. The main
towns are the former county town of Fife at Cupar and the
university town of St Andrews, which has a dramatic increase in
population during term time with students from the UK and abroad
studying there. In addition there are numerous smaller towns,
villages and hamlets throughout the area.
The A92 road runs through the area between Glenrothes area and
the Tay Road Bridge. The main east coast railway line runs through
the area with stations at Cupar, Ladybank, Springfield and
Leuchars.
Agriculture, fishing and tourism are the principle industries in
the area with golf related tourism extremely popular, particularly
in the St Andrews area. Other attractions include the East Neuk
fishing villages and Falkland Palace.
Major events include the Open Golf Championship, held regularly
at St.Andrews, Dunhill Links championship, held at St.Andrews and
nearby at Kingsbarns and each September, Leuchars Air Show takes
place at the RAF base there attracting large crowds.
