Guidance Notes When Applying For A Shot Gun
Certificate
1. Fees
The fee for the grant of a Shot Gun Certificate is £50.
Cheques should be made payable to Fife Council. But – if you are
applying for a Firearm Certificate at the same time or already hold
a Firearm Certificate, see paragraph 2 below – Coterminous
Certificates.
2. Coterminous Certificates
If you are applying for the grant or renewal of a Shot Gun
Certificate and you already hold a Firearm Certificate, you can
save money in the long term by requesting that both certificates
expire on the same date (i.e. made coterminous). By ticking
question 21b on the Shot Gun application form we will arrange for
your certificate to expire on the same date as your Firearm
Certificate. Future renewals of your Shot Gun Certificate will be
at the reduced fee of £10.
Please note that the reduced fee can only be applied at the
time of grant/renewal of a Firearm Certificate.
3. Countersignatories
The countersignatory must be one of the class of persons
mentioned in note 6 on the back of the application form. The term
'person of similar standing' can include persons whose names can be
found in a public book of reference including members of
professional bodies (such as architects, accountants and
surveyors), persons who hold, or have held, a regular commission in
Her Majesty's Forces or who are qualified teachers in recognised
schools. An applicant's employer may also sign if it is a well
established business and the applicant is well known to him or
her.
The medical profession would appreciate
not using doctors (unless they are personal friends) as
appointments made for this purpose take up valuable surgery
time.
4. Previous Convictions
All previous convictions must be declared on the application
form. It is an offence under Section 28A(7) of the Firearms Acts
1968 to 1997 to make a false declaration when answering this
question. It is not permissible to withhold any previous
convictions by virtue of the Rehabilitation of Offenders Act 1974
(Exceptions) Order 1975 (see note on the application form). If
the exact date cannot be remembered give an approximation as well
as the nature of the offence.
IF THE APPLICATION IS TO RENEW A SHOT
GUN CERTIFICATE THEN ONLY CONVICTIONS ACCRUED SINCE THE DATE OF
ISSUE OF THE EXISTING CERTIFICATE NEED BE DECLARED.
