news
North East Fife is a rural area that has relatively low crime
levels, however, as with any major event and increased visitors to
the area, carelessness or inattention with your property will
present both the opportunist and organised criminal with increased
possibilities. We are also keen to ensure your journey to and from
the event is as smooth and safe as possible.
Are you are aware that there is a ban on the use and
possession of mobile phones within the boundaries of the Old Course
at St Andrews?
With this in mind we would ask you to identify a meeting point
should any of your party become separated. It goes without saying
that in the case of a missing child, Fife Constabulary will use all
available resources to trace them with the minimum of delay but
where it is obvious that a member of your group has been separated
a pre arranged rendezvous point will come in handy. It would be a
good idea to remind younger members of your group to contact a
Police Officer/Course Marshall or indeed any official associated
with the event, should they get lost as this will reduce the amount
of time you will be looking for your child rather than watching the
golf.
Mobile phone advice
If you intend to leave your phone in the car, be
discreet and make sure it is out of view.
What are the roads like around St Andrews?
The majority of people driving to the Championship will use the
A91. With the volume of traffic forecast to be many times that of a
normal day the secret to success is patience! Fife Constabulary
host the Open Golf more frequently than other police force and we
have a lot of experience. Your enjoyment of the event is linked
with how stress free your journey has been to get to the golf so we
ask that you drive safely, considerately and with tolerance for
others. This would be a good time to point you to the travel plans,

So, to protect your possessions be mindful of the following:
- Do not leave ANY valuables, including golf clubs, within your
vehicle. If necessary lock them out of sight even if only leaving
your vehicle for a short time.
- When removing Sat-Navs remember to remove the sucker mark and
to replace the cigarette lighter/power outlet cover as criminals
look for these telltale signs.
- Remember that what you may not regard as being of value may
attract a thief to break-in.
- Be aware of pickpockets, especially in crowded areas. Keep
cash, travellers cheques, bank cards and credit cards out of sight.
Carry them in an inside pocket or an internal compartment of a bag
or rucksack where possible. This also applies to items such as
wallets, purses, mobile phones and music pods.
- Never let handbags or rucksacks out of your sight even for a
few seconds. Keep them closed whilst carrying them.
- Do not place bags or purses in areas where they can be easily
stolen such as shopping trolleys, on counters or on top of an open
bag.
- Do not leave items such as Mobile Phones, Cameras or
iPods lying in open view. Where possible security mark items such
as these using an ultra-violet marker pen with your postcode and
house number.
- Make use of any facilities or arrangements provided by Hotels
and Guesthouses to safeguard cash, valuables or important documents
such as passports.
- Never leave cash or valuables in an empty room
- If out socialising always make sure that you are aware of how
to get back to your accommodation. Use a taxi or public transport
rather than attempting to walk back on unfamiliar roads,
particularly if poorly lit.
- Let someone know where you are going, how you are getting there
and back and what route you intend to use. Let them know if your
plans change.
Further advice can be obtained prior to the event by contacting
the Community Safety Officer for North East Fife on 0845 600 5702
or during the event contact one of the Community Safety Officers
who will be available to provide Personal Safety and Security
advice at the Revolution Bus situated on The Scores behind the
R&A Clubhouse.
Finally can we reassure you that our planning for this event has
taken most possibilities into consideration but we firmly believe
that your co-operation is major part in the success of the
event.
Fife Constabulary Lost / Missing Person (s) Guidance
We've touched on missing persons earlier but just to let you
know, we have been working with the R&A for some considerable
time in the run up to the Championship to produce a cohesive
missing person procedure.
The R&A will have have maps of the course on display
identifying the large screen within the tented village as an easily
recognisable meeting place for people who become separated from
their party. All Marshals have been given detailed briefings by
Fife Constabulary in the event of a missing person being reported
to them.
The absence of mobile phones on the course is going to make the
identification of a common meeting point extremely useful during
the event. Children are a different matter and it is good practice
if you ensure your child makes contact with a police officer or
official if they become separated.
Suspicious packages or persons
Our experience in policing the Open Championships at St Andrews
indicates that the event represents a very safe environment for
those attending. Planning in the run up to and during the event has
taken into consideration all aspects of security and we are sure
you would agree with us when we take this opportunity to ask that
if you see anything of a suspicious nature or anybody that you feel
is out of place to report it to the nearest golf official or police
officer.
